Thalamus Raises $30 Million Series B to Expand Physician Workforce for Health Systems and Patients Nationwide

Santa Clara, CA – January 30, 2025 – Thalamus, a public benefit corporation (PBC) working to advance high-quality medical education and training, today announced it has secured $30 million in a Series B funding round led by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), with participation from Kapor Capital, Fresco Capital, and LAUNCH’s Syndicate, with additional investments anticipated in a planned second close.  This additional capital will be used to accelerate Thalamus’s efforts to help physicians find optimal career pathways and assist health systems with physician workforce management, ultimately delivering the best care for patients and society.

Since its founding in 2013, Thalamus has enhanced medical residency and fellowship recruitment through comprehensive, data-driven, and responsible AI/ML solutions for application review and interview management.  The software streamlines complex recruitment logistics, while enabling health systems to focus on assessing physician candidates holistically.

Thalamus is used by more than 8,000 Graduate Medical Education (GME) training programs at over 800 academic institutions, and within the top 100 largest health systems nationwide, including Mass General Brigham, Stanford Health Care, Mayo Clinic, Cedars-Sinai, Northwell Health, and Kaiser Permanente.  Additionally, over 450,000 physicians have used Thalamus to date, which is approximately 50% of all practicing doctors in the United States,  and growing by nearly 100% of all new medical school graduates each year.

“As a public benefit corporation, we’re deeply committed to our north star of ‘Connecting the Docs’ and building a robust physician workforce that is representative of the communities it serves,” said Jason Reminick, MD, MBA, MS, CEO and Founder at Thalamus.  “This fundraise represents a key milestone in Thalamus’s journey that will allow for further expansion into broader physician recruitment, while advancing our best-in-class innovation in GME and beyond.  The aggregation of these efforts is fully aligned with our mission to ensure that the right doctor ends up at the right hospital to treat the right patients.”

Now with the support of the AAMC, alongside follow-on investment from Kapor Capital, Fresco Capital, and LAUNCH’s Syndicate, Thalamus is well-positioned to continue transforming the way physicians train and develop throughout their careers in medicine.  The AAMC’s investment in Thalamus marks a further expansion of the organizations’ groundbreaking collaboration within academic medicine, which was formally announced in April 2023.

“By supporting a technology leader like Thalamus, we’re proud to accelerate innovation in the transition to residency, fellowship, and beyond,” said David J. Skorton, MD, president and CEO of the AAMC. “This investment in the future of the health care workforce in support of our member medical schools, academic health systems, and teaching hospitals will help medical students, residents, and fellows find the programs and careers where they will thrive. This will result in a stronger, more resilient health care workforce that is better prepared to meet the needs of patients across our nation.”

According to the most recent AAMC data, the U.S. is expected to experience a shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036.  Alongside its support from the AAMC, Thalamus will leverage the funds raised — together with its existing relationships with health systems — to accelerate efforts to improve transitions throughout physician workforce pathways and equip institutions with the tools necessary to address evolving health care needs.

“We are thrilled to continue to support Thalamus in its mission to create an equitable and accessible physician workforce now and into the future,” said Ulili Onovakpuri, Managing Partner at Kapor Capital and Thalamus Board Member. “Thalamus exemplifies the potential of tech-driven solutions to advance social good. This platform is designed not just to improve logistics and processes, but to foster a more inclusive system—one that helps build the medical workforce and health equity that our communities need. Combine that with the aligned mission and deepening relationship with the AAMC, and this is truly something special.  We are excited to see what Jason and the Thalamus team will accomplish going forward.”
