Our Story
Thalamus was established in December 2013. Based in Santa Clara, CA, in the heart of Silicon Valley, the company also has a regional office in Nashville, TN, the healthcare capital of the US.
The organization was founded by a former combined pediatrics/anesthesiology resident and an anesthesiology residency Program Director (and now Associate DIO). The company was created through a grassroots collaboration of program directors, program coordinators, GME administrators and applicants/medical students to address the inefficiencies in the residency and fellowship interview management process around a particularly noteworthy recruitment season interrupted by Hurricane Sandy.
Team Thalamus is composed of a group of innovative entrepreneurs, seasoned academics and experienced technologists, many of whom have spent the majority of their careers in Graduate Medical Education and are passionate about building recruitment processes that are equitable, diverse and inclusive.
In January 2019, the company graduated from Jason Calacanis’ Launch Accelerator as the top company in the 11th cohort. In July 2019, Thalamus closed its seed round led by Fresco Capital, 37 Angels , Kapor Capital and the Launch Syndicate.
Since that time we’ve been building and scaling our services to include Thalamus Core, Itinerary Wizard, Thalamus’ Custom Video Platform and Cortex. We are excited about what the future holds.
A team that understands the process
Jason Reminick, MD, MBA, MS
Jason began his residency interview season stuck in NYC during Hurricane Sandy. After three cancelled interviews and spending weeks trying to reschedule, he and Suzie began brainstorming a better way to manage the process. Thus, Thalamus was born. Since then, he has been committed to disrupting the interview scheduling and management process so that applicants, administrators, directors and coordinators alike can have a more enjoyable interview season.
Suzie Karan, MD, FASA
Having spent over ten years as an anesthesiology residency program director battling the lake effect snow of Rochester, NY, along with the accompanying last-minute cancellations, Suzie had long imagined a system where interview scheduling could be managed automatically. Gone would be the days of the excessive phone calls and emails that occupied the majority of her program coordinator’s workload. And then in early 2013, what was scheduled as one of her regular mentor meetings with Jason turned into a discussion of what would then become Thalamus.

Rated #1 by applicants & programs
"Thalamus has truly turned our hectic recruitment season into a joy! We are able to focus more on ensuring we show each applicant why Duke is the place for them, rather than spending it hand-scheduling each applicant. It promotes fairness, effectiveness, and most importantly, efficiency! We will never look back on what we had prior to Thalamus!"

"I cannot imagine going through interview season without Thalamus! With a program as large as ours, having an online scheduling system in which applicants can schedule and edit their interview dates, allows me the time to manage all the other processes involved with interview season. We conducted over 260 applicant interviews this year; our highest volume year ever! This would not have been possible without Thalamus! Every program needs Thalamus!"

"I recently completed my fifth interview season using Thalamus. I no longer spend countless hours on the phone or email scheduling and rescheduling interviews. Thalamus gives the applicant the control and flexibility to schedule their interview based on their availability, all the while, freeing me up to create the best interview experience possible!"
