Thalamus.Org Names Jamie Thayer Scates as First CEO to Expand Scholarships and Programs to Strengthen US Physician Workforce

[Nashville, TN, March 19, 2025]Thalamus.Org, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, proudly announced today the appointment of Jamie Thayer Scates as its first Chief Executive Officer.  The nonprofit, closely affiliated with Thalamus, the premier interview management platform specifically designed for application to graduate medical education training programs, is dedicated to expanding the physician workforce by making the residency application and interview process affordable and accessible for all medical students.

Jamie brings over two decades of leadership experience in nonprofit and academic medicine, most recently serving as the long-time CEO of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and AMSA Foundation. Under her leadership, AMSA experienced a transformative financial turnaround, expanded domestic medical student membership by 250% after launching an institutional partnership program, and secured over $3.5 million in grant funding to support medical students. Her extensive expertise in strategic planning, fundraising, and partnerships uniquely positions her to lead Thalamus.Org into its next phase of impact and growth.

"Jamie is a visionary leader with a deep commitment to equity in medical education. Her experience and passion make her the perfect candidate to expand Thalamus.Org’s impact, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of talented, diverse medical students achieving their dreams to build the representative physician workforce of tomorrow," said Jason Reminick, MD, MBA, MS, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Thalamus.Org and CEO & Founder of Thalamus. "Her leadership marks a new chapter for Thalamus.Org, amplifying our ability to provide scholarships and grants that support aspiring physicians during the critical transition from medical school to residency."

As CEO, Jamie will spearhead Thalamus.Org’s initiatives to broaden access to residency for medical students who are underrepresented in medicine, grow scholarship programs, and foster strategic partnerships that advance the organization’s mission to build a physician workforce representative of the communities it serves. Since its founding in 2022, Thalamus.Org has awarded grants and scholarships to help medical students defray the costs of applying to residency.  Jamie’s appointment marks an important  step in expanding the organization’s reach and impact on the future of healthcare.

"I am honored to join Thalamus.Org at such a pivotal time," said Jamie Thayer Scates. "Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to creating opportunities for medical students, and I am excited to lead an organization that directly supports the next generation of physicians. Together, we will eliminate financial barriers and ensure all aspiring doctors have an equal opportunity to succeed."

Thalamus.Org provides grants, scholarships, and financial support to medical students navigating the transition from medical school to residency. By addressing systemic inequities in the physician pipeline, the organization plays a crucial role in shaping a healthcare system that best serves all patients.
