Role: Account Manager
Primary responsibility: Customer relationship management & revenue growth
Physicians are the backbone of our healthcare system, and our mission is to ensure the right medical students and residents are matched to the right training opportunities.
Every year, approximately 50,000 students apply to become medical residents at hospitals throughout the US. And about 35,000 of those will successfully match into those positions.
For applicants, the residency match process is a critical phase in a life dedicated to the dream of practicing medicine. For residency programs, the match process is a critical phase of their mission to transfer practical knowledge to the next generation who will advance medicine into the future. Thalamus was born to optimize and streamline this process, to make a stressful transition better for all stakeholders.
Our cloud-based interview management platform is used by hospital program administrators and faculty to manage all the moving pieces involved with application review, scheduling, interviewing (including virtually), scoring, and ranking. We integrate with ERAS (the application portal) and the NRMP (where the match algorithm does its magic). For applicants, they can sign up for interviews in real time (like open table without a restaurant) and manage their calendars.
Over 200 academic medical centers and hospital systems in the US & Canada, representing 2500+ residency and fellowship programs over 100 specialties, trust Thalamus for this critical piece of the process. Over 90% of all applicants pass through Thalamus as well. We are the premier solution and the experts in GME recruitment.
Our work is just beginning, and that’s where you come in!
Are you a “people person”? – Without customers, we don’t have a business. Without happy customers, we don’t have a happy business. We want a happy business! You’ll be the primary point of contact between our customers and Thalamus. Your goal will be nothing short of creating Raving Fans out of each of your customer contacts. You’ll know you’re successful when we have too many testimonials to publish and can’t keep up with the word-of-mouth referral growth.
Are you a relationship builder? – As the junction between our customers and Thalamus, you’ll work closely with sales & the onboarding/training team to ensure smooth hand-offs between those transition points. You’ll also build a deep web of connections within your accounts to include Program Coordinators, Program Directors, DIOs, IT, and others in and outside the GME office. You’ll know more about the dynamics of your accounts than some of your contacts will. Your contacts will respect you as a peer and like you as a friend.
Are you a subject matter expert? – The GME world is a tight-knit community and workflows are unique. If you have experience with GME, that will help you quickly become productive. If not, you should have experience where you’ve mastered at least one or two other industries in the past. If you can’t speak the language and understand customer pain points, you’ll struggle. That won’t be good for anyone.
Are you organized? – Account management is essentially project management for people. You’ll be adept at gaining leverage with PM tools like Asana. You’ll also value Salesforce.com, as your system of record. At any time, someone could step in and cover for you without missing a beat. Your friends may describe you as an obsessive organizer about these things, but we both know that’s just a little bit okay in this case.
Are you able to ask for money? – If you’ve done your job right, renewals should easy. As Thalamus releases new features, you’ll need to have an expert-level knowledge of how they will benefit your accounts and not be afraid to sell them. Additionally, we have individual programs under contract in hundreds of hospitals. You’ll work alone (or possibly with sales) to expand our footprint within a given organization by cross-selling into new programs and working strategically to transition accounts to enterprise-wide licenses. Net churn will be a critical metric for you, and this role may carry a quota.
Are you self-motivated and productive? – You’ll carry a large number of accounts with responsibilities for both generating new revenue as well as customer happiness. We’ll do our best to give you the best tools, but it’ll be incumbent upon you to develop a rhythm and manage your time and energy to deliver the best ROI. This is a role with a lot of autonomy and responsibility, for which the flip side is a lot of accountability. You may never have worked under these exact conditions, but you should be able to tell us about experiences in the past where you’ve excelled in this dynamic.
What’s next (Our Process):
