Role: Account Executive 

Primary responsibility: Prospecting and closing new accounts

Every year, approximately 50,000 students apply to become medical residents at hospitals throughout the US. And about 35,000 of those will successfully match into those positions. 

For applicants, the residency match process is a critical phase in a life dedicated to the dream of practicing medicine. For residency programs, the match process is a critical phase of their mission to transfer practical knowledge to the next generation who will advance medicine into the future. Thalamus was born to optimize and streamline this process, to make a stressful transition better for all stakeholders. 

Our cloud-based interview management platform is used by hospital program administrators and faculty to manage all the moving pieces involved with application review, scheduling, interviewing (including virtually), scoring, and ranking. We integrate with ERAS (the application portal) and the NRMP (where the match algorithm does its magic). For applicants, they can sign up for interviews in real time (like open table without a restaurant) and manage their calendars. 

Over 200 academic medical centers and hospital systems in the US & Canada, representing 2500+ residency and fellowship programs over 100 specialties, trust Thalamus for this critical piece of the process. About you:

That’s where you come in! 

Are you someone who likes a challenge? – As our first official salesperson, you’ll not only be closing new programs, but you’ll be also shaping the overall sales process. Previous experience in smaller companies or an entrepreneurial background will help you immensely in this capacity. People who know you would describe you as “adaptable.” 

Are you interested in maximizing your income? – This will be a quota-carrying role with uncapped commissions. If you’ve never carried a quota before, that’s not necessarily a disqualifier. You should be able to show us other situations where you’ve been a high performer against an objective goal. 

Are you self-motivated and organized? – You’ll be developing your own prospect list and diligently working it. You only have so many hours in the day, and you’ll need to be an expert at deriving the highest ROI for that time. You’ll also be integral in running the entire sales process; familiarity with will be helpful and excellent organizational skills will be critical to your success. 

Are you customer-obsessed? – The best salespeople understand that their job is to help the customer buy. We’re an enterprise B2B SaaS solution selling into a unique market. You’ll be someone who can quickly understand where our users struggle in their current process, creative in shaping a vision where Thalamus will help them, and a professional who can cultivate the relationship and buy-in to close a deal. 

Are you a subject matter expert? – The GME world is a tight-knit community and workflows are unique. If you have experience with GME, that will help you quickly become productive. If not, you should have experience where you’ve mastered at least one or two other industries in the past. The nature of our prospects is such that you’ll need to be able to effectively close a deal on one call. If you can’t speak the language and understand customer pain points, you’ll struggle. That won’t be good for anyone. 

Are you a team player? – A sales role is unique as the metrics of success or failure are very clear. It’s also one where your personal drive is directly correlated to your income. Closing new business is important but so is keeping the big picture of the company in mind. We are a small team, all dedicated to the same mission, and we’ll succeed together, or we’ll fail together.

2) If your story resonates, he’ll follow-up and schedule an initial, 30-minute conversation. This is less of an interview than an opportunity for both sides to establish alignment. Please plan to come to that call with questions to ensure this is a good fit for you.

3) If everyone is feeling good, we’ll kick off a formal interview process. You’ll have calls with our CEO as well as one or more members of our team.  

4) Assuming the interviews went well, we’ll move into a formal offer conversation and nail down details like compensation and start-date. 

5) Once an offer is signed, we’ll do a pre-employment background check and other paperwork as a condition of employment. 

6) With all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed, we’ll welcome you to Team Thalamus and kick off your onboarding process!
